Sodom and Gomorrah (1) were wealthy communities located in the Dead Sea region. Among their wealth was an abundance of bitumen, water and fertile soil.
Bitumen them what is the oil of the United States. It is a black or brown oily substance, flammable, gel, tar-like, and has a waterproofing agent. As there are many derivatives of oil (petroleum jelly, tar, gasoline, paraffin wax, fuel oil, kerosene, jet fuel, to name a few), there are many derivatives of bitumen. If you need optical bitumen, consider “asphalt”. They used it on rooftops as a water repellent and burned it at the end of the columns to illuminate the night. Noah’s descendants used it among the mud bricks when they built the Tower of Babel.
Bitumen is one of many natural resources that have transformed Sodom and Gomorrah into a rich society. Their wealth was so great that neighboring kingdoms often attacked them and took parts of their wealth and food. (Genesis 14:11) But it seems that Sodom and Gomorrah did not face enough struggle from these kingdoms to make them seek God’s help or interest. God told Abraham:
“The uproar against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their iniquity so sad that I will fall and see if what they did was as bad as the one I got. If not, I will know– Genesis 18: 20-21
What was the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah against God?
In seeking to answer this question, I faced a lot of debate about the inability of many scholars to prove conclusively what sin was committed. I don’t think the answer is difficult. I found eight (8) of them in the Old Testament, many of them the teachings of Jesus.
Sins 1 and 2: Lack of hospitality and stubbornness.
“If nobody welcomes you or listens to your words, you should get rid of the dust when you leave the house or town. I tell you the truth, it will be more likely for Sodom and Gomorrah on Judgment Day than that city. “ Matthew 10:14
Whenever Jesus uses the Old Testament as a point of reference, he is always associated with the message he conveys to his audience. Here, he talks with the pupils and warns them not to waste time with those who refuse to listen and obey. He then goes on to compare those with strong heads to Sodom and Gomorrah. Such comparisons would not be needed if people had nothing in common.
Some believe that the lack of hospitality was so great among these people that they treated strangers so brazenly, that they mutilated and drove others. I came across one of these incidents in my reading that these two communities would give the bed to a stranger, but if he was too short, his body would stretch to become fit; if he was tall, they would cut off his legs. Because this calculation is not the key point in this article, I did not spend time researching to prove or refute this particular issue. However, I think people will be this inhospitable is beyond me.
Sins 3, 4 and 5: sexual immorality, lying, and adultery.
“Let Lot, where are the men who came to you tonight? Take them out so we can have sex with them. “ – Genesis 19: 5
“Among the prophets of Jerusalem I saw something terrible: they commit adultery and live a lie. It strengthens the hands of the wicked, so that no one turns away from evil. They are all like Sodom to me, the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah. ” Jeremiah 23:14
The new International Version (NIV) uses the term “sex with them” while the King James Version (KJV) uses the word “know them”. No matter how you interpret these words, you get the idea that these people don’t want to sit down and have dinner with these men (angels). Their intentions were not good. If you read more:
“Lot went out to meet him and closed the door behind him and said: No, my friends. Don’t do this evil thing. See, I have two daughters who didn’t sleep with a man. Let me take them out to you, and you can do whatever you want with them. But do not do anything to these men, because they have been protected by my roof. “– Genesis 19: 6-8
“They replied: “Get out of our way”– Genesis 19: 9
To expose his daughters to the appeasement of these men ‘s insatiable appetite, Lot leads me to conclude that one of their sins involved sexual misconduct.
“In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns handed over to sexual immorality and deviation. It serves as an example for those suffering from the eternal fire penalty– “Jude 1: 7
Aside from the obvious, there is something interesting here that I should point out. Although Sodom and Gomorrah are mentioned several times in the Bible, Jude explains that they were not the only cities destroyed. While I read this Bible again, I cannot ignore what Jude says “… Sodom and Gomorrah And surrounding towns… ”
Archaeologists have found numerous sites with charred remains throughout the southern parts of the Dead Sea. They have difficulty decrypting sites that are really Sodom and Gomorrah.
In addition, Sodom and Gomorrah and surrounding towns suffered from problems of adultery and lying.
Sins 6, 7 and 8: Arrogance, Moldiness, Arrogance.
“Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters were arrogant, excessive and uninterested; they did not help the poor and needy. They were arrogant and did odious things in front of me. So, I got rid of them as I saw. “ Ezekiel 16: 49-50
How often have we been uncomfortable with those who provide the service or our neighbors? Listen to God speaking through Paul:
“Love must be honest. I hate what is evil. Clinging to what is good. To devote one another to brotherly love. Respect each other above yourselves. Never lack you, but keep your spiritual zeal, serving the Lord. Be happy in hope, patience in affliction, and believers in prayer. Share with people in need. Hospitality practice.Romans 12: 9-13
“Conversely: if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing so, the pile will burn coal on the head. Do not overcome evil, but overcome evil– “Romans 12: 20-21
Born from the wealth of Sodom and Gomorrah was the spirit of arrogance, which generated arrogance, and which generated nothingness. Pointing fingers at wealthy Americans who were not as generous as they should not go is enough. People of all economic situation share these disadvantages.
It stems from the belief that everything we have and our work for is derived from our hands. But what is success, money, or power apart from God?
Sodom and Gomorrah firmly believe that their prosperity came through their hands. From their point of view, there was no need to thank God. He must have been insulted! According to Ezekiel 16: 49-50, of abundance, none of them were involved. Naughty means: arrogant. To be proud in a way that shows contempt for others. When you feel this level of pride, you do not treat others gently, they are under you.
If you look at these sins collectively, you can understand why God is angry with Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns. Ignorance is an abomination and leads to spiritual death.
Let us not get caught so that we do not respond to the righteous life that God calls us.
